Should Quebec Separate from Canada?

The Parti Quebecois includes Quebec's separation from Canada as a major part of its party platform.  The last separation referendum was held in 1995, and another had been held in 1980.

Quebec Should Separate and Become Its Own Sovereign Nation

Quebec Should Remain Part of Canada

Cultural Independence

The culture in Quebec is distinctive from the rest of Canada.  In order to maintain that cultural heritage, independence is required.

Cultural Independence

The culture in Quebec is respected by the rest of Canada.  Independence will not benefit Quebec culture.

Economic Independence

Quebec will be able to achieve its own economic independence.

Economic Independence

Quebec currently receives provincial equalization payments. In 2014, the amount received was $9.3 million which is $1130 per capita.  Equalization payments would not continue if Quebec was a sovereign nation.2

Boundaries

Quebec would keep its existing boundaries according to international law.

Boundaries

If it is accepted that a part of a country has the right to choose autonomy, which must be true if Quebec seeks independence, than that logic must fall to some regions within Quebec as well.  The Ungava region towards the north of Quebec is home to a number of Quebec's aboriginal peoples, who have collectively expressed that they would stay a part of Canada in the case of separation.4
