Is Debate the best way to discuss differing opinions?

Debate is defined as two parties each taking a particular side of an issue and attempting to provide the best points for that side of the argument. This topic is intended to review the pros and cons of this approch.

Debate Works Effectively

There are better Options

Debate effectively ensures that the best arguments are presented on both sides of the issue. Clearly defining which side of the argument the participants are meant to argue ensures that they focus on finding the best evidence available for that position. Debate limits the possible outcomes to two alternatives, and leaves little room for compromise. A better system would allow space for proponents of both sides to come together to some agreeable midpoint between both starting positions.
